Ticket Gate

How do you say "Ticket gate" in Japanese?

Essential Tips for Japanese Ticket Gates

These tips will help you navigate the automated ticket gates common in Japanese train stations.

  1. The Two Main Methods (2種類の通過方法)

You will use one of two things to go through the gate:

    Method English Explanation Japanese Term
IC Card Tap! Hold your card (like Suica or Pasmo) flat on the sensor until the light turns green. Do not put the card in the slot! タッチ (Touch)
Paper Ticket Insert and Take! Put your ticket into the slot. The machine will shoot it back out on the other side. Always remember to take your ticket! 挿入と回収 (Insert and Take)

  2. The Golden Rule (最も重要なルール)
    • You must use your ticket or card TWICE: once to enter the station and once to exit the station.
    • Keep your ticket or card safe during your journey!

  3. Using the Shinkansen Gate (新幹線に乗る場合)

The Shinkansen (Bullet Train) is special!

    • When you take the Shinkansen, you often have TWO TICKETS (a base fare ticket and a limited express ticket).
    • Rule: You must insert BOTH TICKETS stacked together into the gate at the same time. The machine will check them both and might return only one—make sure to grab what comes out!

  4. When the Gate Won't Open (改札が開かない時)

Don't panic! It happens to everyone.

If the gate closes and makes a red 'X' or an alarm sound, it usually means your fare was too low (Not enough money).

    What to do:

    • Look for the "Fare Adjustment Machine" (精算機 - Seisanki) inside the station area. Insert your ticket, pay the extra money, and get your new ticket to exit.
    • If you have any other problem (e.g., forgotten ticket, expired pass), look for the small window next to the gate and say: "Sumimasen!" (Excuse me!) The staff will help you.

Key takeaway: Always be ready to insert or tap your ticket/card, and always remember to take the ticket back out!
